Sunflour Baking Company is a family owned bakery and café dedicated to scratch baking in small batches every day. Their food is prepared without preservatives, no artificial flavorings, no dough conditioners, bleached or bromated flour. They prepare their food onsite where you can step right up the glass and see how the master bakers and cooks create your food.

We were given a chance to have a glimpse of how the café is being run by one of its owner Jack Parrish and here’s what he has to say..

How long have you been in business? Sunflour has been in business in Elizabeth since 2009.  The current owners Umarin and Jack Parrish bought the business in 2014 and have been expanding it ever since.

What do you love most about being your own boss? It’s the freedom to run the business in the best way for the local community, not in the best way for a big corporation.

What makes Charlotte so special? There is quite a diverse international community hiding out in Charlotte.

What is your favorite local restaurant? Sunflour of course! 🙂

Do you see yourself opening another branch on other locations? We just did in January 2016!  On East Boulevard in Dilworth.

Why do your customers stay or do repeat business with you? People love our product and our service.  It’s a very relaxing place to hang out.

To what do you attribute your success? It’s because we haveFantastic employees!”

What is unique about your business?  Thoughtful, careful and efficient!

By far, Sunflour offers the best croissant in all of Charlotte, the coffee and espresso is also very good as they use Counter Culture premium and local coffee beans. The atmosphere is lively and simple. You will surely love this place, it’s a great place to meet friends or read a book and have lunch alone.

Dr. Richard Porter, the grandfather of Andrew Porter (Owner & Distiller) was the inspiration and the name behind this venture. Brewing and Distilling have always been a passion for Andrew and a couple of years ago, he and his wife, Liz, started the journey of opening a grain to glass distillery. Their goal is to create great spirits and make the Queen City proud.

We had the pleasure of chatting with Liz Porter and this is her response to the questions we have asked her:

1. How long have you been in business? – We opened our doors for tours and tastings in November 2015 but have been working on getting Doc Porter’s up and running since late 2012. Starting up a distillery is a long and detailed process, but we think it’s been time well spent.

2. What do you love most about being your own boss? – We love running our own business because we get to decide what we stand for and what our brand is. For instance, it’s important to us to make everything from scratch using as many North Carolina agricultural products as possible. Some distilleries use bulk ethanol as a base for their products but we feel like a true craft spirit starts from scratch and is made by a passionate distiller from start to finish. We really want to educate consumers about grain-to-glass and what sets our products apart. It’s a much more detailed and time consuming production, but since we’re the bosses, no one can make us change our philosophy to save time or money.

3. What makes Charlotte so special? – Not sure where to begin with this one because we’re definitely passionate Charlotteans. Charlotte has big city culture, eats, and experiences, but it’s all packaged with friendly southern attitudes. After coming from the suburbs of much larger cities up north, it’s nice that strangers smile at you and strike up a conversation. People here take such pride in the city and we really hope to leave our mark on a city that we hope to stay in for a long, long time.

4. Have you always wanted to own your own business? – I don’t think owning our own business was something that we’ve both always dreamed of. It’s more doing something we love every day that was so appealing. The thing that we love just happens to turn itself into a business.

5. For someone visiting Charlotte, what is the one must see? – You’d have to be visiting on the right weekend, but the Fourth Ward Garden tour would be my choice. Andrew and I met in the Fourth Ward when we both lived there years ago, so it’s special for us to begin with but in my opinion, it is the absolute coolest part of the city. In the spring, when the homeowners open their city gardens up to the public it’s awesome. There’s so much history in that part of Uptown so it’s a must see for me.

6. What is your favorite local restaurant? – Tough call because we have so many, but if you’re going for a uniquely North Carolina experience, I’d have to pick Heirloom.

7. Do you see yourself opening another branch on other locations? – If business really starts booming, an expansion could be down the road. Not necessarily another branch, but maybe a larger facility.

8. Why do your customers stay or do repeat business with you? – We hope that people drink Doc Porter’s because it’s a fantastic product that they love. We don’t want to be a North Carolina novelty product, but rather, people’s spirits of choice because they’re just better and people enjoy them and are proud to drink them.

9. To what do you attribute your success? – We’re brand new so it’s tough to write about being successful in a business sense yet but the feedback that we’ve gotten from people that have tried our products is overwhelmingly positive. It’s incredibly encouraging and lets us know that if we keep on the path of making products we’re passionate about, we’re headed for success.

10. What do you look for in an employee? – Someone who is honest, believes in our philosophy, works hard and wants to be a part of starting something from the ground up. Definitely someone who understands that opening a new business is a struggle and a grid and wants to be a part of that without hesitation.

11. What is unique about your business? – Our products! We take products that people are passionate about (spirits – vodka, gin, bourbon) and have been drinking for a long time and make them personal. Rather than continuing to buy a spirit that’s cranked out of a giant factory, they now have an option that’s created from scratch, with care in their own city.

12. What are your responsibilities as the business owner? – Since we’re just getting started, we wear pretty much every hat at one time or another. Production, compliance, marketing, accounting, PR, hiring, tasting room staff…we do it all at one time or another.

Doc Porter’s Distillery is conveniently located along 232 East Peterson Dr. in Charlotte. You can take a 40 to 45 minute tour to learn all about vodka, gin and bourbon.  Andrew & Liz Porter clearly love what they do and they are very passionate about the craft.

The Sugar Creek Brewing Company is dedicated to brewing high quality ales in a style and commitment representative of the Belgian Trappist monks. Their philosophy combines the watchful eye of a Trappist Monk with the technical precision of a nuclear engineer to craft fresh, full-flavored beer that is immeasurably satisfying and intensely drinkable. Sugar Creek infuses traditional recipes with modern tastes and techniques to create beer that nourishes both mind and body.

They have Food trucks Mondays through Wednesdays and they serve their own food fare Thursdays thru Sundays. You should definitely try a Panini, they are to die for! They usually have free brewery tours on Saturdays too!

We had the opportunity to talk with one of the owners Eric Flanigan and here’s what he has to say..

How long have you been in business?  Sugar Creek Brewing Company is just over a year old.  We’re celebrating our two year anniversary on October 15, 2016. Mark your calendars, we have some really awesome things lined up for the party.
What do you love most about being your own boss?  My favorite thing about being my own boss is coaching and developing staff.  Joe Vogelbacher (the other owner) and I also enjoy creating a positive company culture.

What makes Charlotte so special?  The people are the best! You can’t beat the Southern Hospitality found in this city.

Have you always wanted to own your own business? Yes.

For someone visiting Charlotte, what is the one must see?  If you’re visiting Charlotte you need to check out the White Water Center.  They have something for people of all ages.
What is your favorite local restaurant?  There are way too many great restaurants in Charlotte to pick just one!

Do you see yourself opening another branch on other locations?  Sugar Creek beers will be available in Greenville, SC and Columbia, SC starting on June 20th.  Raleigh and Charleston would be two other areas that would be great to have a presence in.

Why do your customers stay or do repeat business with you?  Our customers appreciate our relentless commitment to brewing high quality, great tasting beer.  In addition to that, we have a lot of repeats Tap Room customers, because our team does a great job making each customer’s experience one they take with them far beyond the brewery walls.

To what do you attribute your success?  Our success can be attributed to old fashioned hard work.  Every person working at our brewery works their tail off and goes above and beyond.

What do you look for in an employee? We look for people who are genuinely passionate about beer and their job.

What is unique about your business? Everyone at our brewery has some level of Cicerone certification. The Cicerone Certification Program certifies and educates beer professionals so they know how to serve, store, taste and pair beers.  We think beer education is extremely important. We want to be able to share that information with our beer drinkers, so they can have the best drinking experience possible.

What are your responsibilities as the business owner?  That’s a loaded question! I do more things than I can list, but I mainly focus on developing our team, overseeing distribution and wholesale account sales, coordinating production and brand presence.

The Sugar Creek Brewing Company is such an awesome brewery! Beautiful settings, delicious brews and great service. Almost everything they do is exemplary and among the best available in the area. And if you are looking for a large room to host an event, they have a side room that they can set up for your group that is an ideal place to have a reception. Sugar Creek Brewing is definitely a can’t miss if you are beer-venturing in Charlotte.

The Bleu Barn Bistro is a Farm to Truck Food Truck that specialize in serving locally-sourced meat and produce from farms that are committed to producing pesticide and hormone free produce as well as grass fed and free range beef and chicken. They cater to all dietary restrictions, including gluten intolerance, Paleo and Primal to name a few.

Bleu Barn Bistro began as the love child of Chef Tara Diamante and Chef Brenton Ebersold in May of 2014. Both Chefs have always enjoyed the seasonality of food and the freshness that this area has to offer. After meeting at Johnson & Wales in late 2008, they kindled a complimentary cooking style along with a vast variety of techniques and expertise.

We had the pleasure of chatting with Chef Tara Diamante, one of the Owner and pulse behind Bleu Barn Bistro and here’s what she have to say on the questions we have asked her.

How long have you been in business? I’ve been in the business for 2 years on June 10.

What do you love most about being your own boss? I get to have one on one connections with my customers. I get to help them create special events, and I get to see the joy on their faces when they love our product.

What makes Charlotte so special? Charlotte is an amazing growing city. The food and beverage atmosphere is always growing, changing, and astonishing me. I love that I get to be a part of such a great culinary community. Plus the city itself is great. There is always something fun to do, the people are kind, and it’s a beautiful city to explore.

Have you always wanted to own your own business? Not really sure. I try to let each day take me where it goes. Owning my own business was just the next chapter in my life. It was been one crazy and fun chapter though. I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.

For someone visiting Charlotte, what is the one must see? That is a hard one to narrow down. I love so much of our city. I would say you must take a stroll through uptown. See a little bit of Charlotte’s history, the Panthers Stadium, BB&T Ball Park, our wonderful parks, and so much more in such a small area or people can take a brewery tour. We have such great neighborhoods with small, pet /kid friendly breweries that are an awesome to hang out. They have great patios and almost always have a local food truck parked on the site, like Bleu Barn Bistro

What is your favorite local restaurant? Custom Shop and Good Food on Montford

Do you see yourself opening another branch on other locations? We don’t see ourselves opening another location, however we are expanding more into catering. We already offer catering from the food truck, but we would love to offer other types of catering services. We currently moved into our own new commissary space which will give us the space we need to make this next step happen.

Why do your customers stay or do repeat business with you? Because the love and care we put into our work. We take a lot of time to source out the best local and seasonal product, which in turn makes our food super fresh and delicious. On top of good food, we pride ourselves in customer service. We take the time to get to know our customers, and their wants and needs. We know a lot of our regulars by name and what they like to eat.

To what do you attribute your success? I attribute my success to everyone around me, and everyone who has helped me along my path so far. I try to take something from every person I meet. I specifically attribute my success to my fiancé, mother, grandma, sister, professors at culinary school, and chefs I got to work under and learn from.

What do you look for in an employee? Dedication, attention to details, and fun to be around. Our company is very small, and customer service based and I need an upbeat professional employee who represents my company as if it is their own and they have to be fun to be around. We spend a lot of time together.

What is unique about your business? Currently our food truck team is all women. People are always surprised when they see us kicking butt and keeping up with all the other men run food trucks around us. We work just as hard in this hot, heavy lifting, very long day industry as anyone around us. I think having women in the truck gives it that extra little touch. We have cute flower pens, our trailer is light blue and adorable, we write our regulars cute little notes on their to go boxes, and everything is clean and presented well.

What are your responsibilities as the business owner? The list is endless: menu development and planning, customer relations, booking events, booking keeping, location scouting, human resources, product sourcing, prepping, cleaning, daily service, and so much more. I don’t expect my employees to do anything I won’t. We are a team and I am out there every day working just as hard as my team.

The Bleu Barn Bistro is definitely a great Food Truck to check out. A food truck that’s serious about delicious food that supports local farms and vendors. You will surely get what you pay for. They will celebrate their 2nd year in the business on June 10, Happy 2nd year Anniversary Bleu Barn Bistro!!!
